Ash and Hazel is a short story, created as willful misreading of the traditional fairytale Aschenputtel for Rewilding Cinderella - a one-day symposium of presentations, performances and conversation held on 2nd April 2022, in collaboration between The George Ewart Evans Storytelling Centre, the Storytelling Choir, and Beyond the Border.
Sprouting from the kernel of Aschenputtel, Ash and Hazel is a new parable for the anthropocene. Informed by Jane Bennett’s theory of Vibrant Matter, this retelling foregrounds the experiences of non-human living beings and their congealed kinships, whilst challenging human exceptionalism via a playful use and mis-use of language.
